Mentoring India Program

In his Independence Day speech,2015 our honourable Prime Minister laid emphasis on the importance of entrepreneurship and job creation. A large number pf people are unable to apply or develop their skills in the most efficient ways due to lack of mentoring and opportunities. To utilize their full potential, they need sustained support, guidance, counselling and timely advice which is provided by mentoring.

Keeping this in mind Mentoring India Program was started in April 2017 to develop a mentoring environment through training, research and consultancy, at every touch point of financial, Government/private institution that an entrepreneur is likely to interact with, especially for SMEs.

It was during the International Mentoring Summit “Mentoring Grassroots Entrepreneurs in Smart Grams for Inclusive Growth” that this flagship program was unveiled by Shri M Venkaiah Naidu, Minister for Urban Development, Shri Rahul Bajaj, and Ms. Lakshmi Venkatesan. Under this initiative BYST has signed MOUs with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Ministry of Railways and State Bank of India to train their officers to become mentors.

In the current entrepreneurial eco-system all the trainers are potential mentors because they interact with the youth who have the vision but neither the guidance nor the means to convert their dreams into reality

The number of mentors selected from different institutions are approximately 2000 per year and 6000 over 3 years.

Objective of the Program

  • To create adequate mentors in the government and private skill institutions in the State by replicating the BYST-collaborative model of mentoring to increase reach and effectiveness across the nation, through training, research and consultancy, which would ultimately promote underserved entrepreneurs and help setting up micro and rural businesses.
  • Mentor development training in 3 years of 6,000 officials in skill development centres and universities by BYST for supporting entrepreneurship and creating further jobs.

Action Plan

  • Identifying and screening of potential mentors by BYST’s expert mentor panels.
  • The selected officials shall be trained in mentoring in classroom sessions with digital online programs and practical on the ground exposure (2 days duration). Once trained they are accredited by the renowned International Skill Development Organization the City and Guilds, UK.
  • Training on mentor - entrepreneur match making
  • The Officer mentors shall be continuously supported and their mentoring monitored by BYST’s expert mentors on a periodic basis for one year. They will in turn mentor the youths and students in the skill and vocational training institutions.

This program strengthens the entrepreneurial eco-system in the State by ensuring that the success rate of entrepreneurs is over 95%. Higher the number of successful entrepreneurs increases the employment percentage of the country tenfold.

Speaking only for the mentors, it gives them immense motivation and personal satisfaction. The mentor gains new perspectives and learns new ideas and methods to solve any given problem. In addition to this it enables a systematic and structured growth of their network at both national and international levels.
